So in what city (s) are you looking for a hotel room?

ted, You didn't specify which city you require Hotel room info? If you have a Library or large Bookstore nearby, you might have a look at ETBD Guidebooks for the cities you'll be visiting. They have listings for Hotels in various parts of each city, and in different price ranges. When you've narrowed down Hotels that you're interested in, check the applicable websites (which are also listed in the Guidebooks). Many Hotels in Europe provide some type of breakfast, which will vary to some extent according to the region. Your budget amount of US$100 is about €75, and in that price range it may be difficult to find properties with all the features you want. You could also have a look at Hostels, some of which provide private double rooms. Happy travels!

One thing to consider when investigating the smaller hotels in your price range is whether or not there is an elevator. Since you are seniors this may be an important factor. The elevator, if there is one, may be only large enough for one person and a small dog, but it's better than huffing and puffing up to the 3rd floor. (Actually this would be the 4th floor in N. America because in France the street level is called the rez-de-chaussée and the next floor up is the 1st.)

Ok guys, this is going to be tough one. How about specials at chain hotels, like Etap or Ibis, where booking in advance may net a deal? I've just searched for the mid weekend of Feb and several Etaps are going for $75 plus taxes, no breakfast, one double and a bunk bed. To find a small hotel under $100 (under 75 €uros) en suite with breakfast in Paris will be difficult. Hostels anyone?

Nigel's right about the ETAP. I've been staying at the one on Rue Babinsky (listed as Porte de Montmartre) off and on for years. It was seventy-five bucks in October/November and looks to be about the same in February. Neat neighborhood. Five minute walk to the metro and a fifteen minute ride into the city center. They serve a breakfast, but it ain't worth the price. There's a bakery in the grocery a couple of doors down and places for coffee on the way to the metro. The euro and a half coffee machine isn't that bad either -- it grinds and brews fresh for each cup.

We are (young) seniors and in March of this year we stayed at the Timhotel Eiffel Tower. They have more than one Timhotel in Paris. It's about two blocks from the Dupleix Metro, about 10 min walk to Eiffel Tower and in an area with many food shops. Believe every room has a private bath. They have an elevator and offer breakfast. Good luck in your search.

You did not mention which city in Spain you would be visiting. However, you may want to check out RS books on both Spain and Paris. He has many options to choose from which meet your requirements. The only question is whether or not you require an elevator. WE DO! So, we always verify with the hotel if one is available. Some of RS recommended properties do not have elevators and many times the price is negotiable with or without breakfast. Also, keep in mind that with RS travel book and cash you receive an additional discount on your stay.

We found a great deal in Paris on hotels.com last year, four nights for price of 3 so only cost $300.00, had elevator, en-suite/breakfast was extra and expensive so we did not use it, half block from metro but a little bit away from middle of town. Try hotels.com to see what deals especially in February when it is not tourist time.

Paris:Try Tourisme Hotel** two star. It is steps away from 3 metro lines; #8,10 & 6 (La Motte-Picquet/Grenelle). The location is not walking distance to many sights, but extremely close to metros. Lots of local places for breakfast right down the street. I like trip advisor for evaluations of hotels and their locations. Stay where the locals live is cheaper and more authentic. One stop up is an Ibis too. Spain: Cheaper hotels on the average. Should not have a problem with $100 per night limit. We did not have breakfast included in Barcelona, but a local place across the street and down the block were both great. One suggestion would be get out and walk daily to get ready to be on your feet and don't forget your Tylenol. Have a great time.

I too have stayed at Ed's Etap. 10 min. walk to bus, 15 or less to Metro. On Sat. Sun, Mon. the St. Ouen Flea Market is a 2 min. walk. Walking up the street, turning rt. from Etap, left at the light, and going under the bridge and towards the Bus stop and the Metro, there are several brasseries and restaurants that you can buy breakfast at, cheaper then the Etap. At Blvd. Ney, go right and look for green awning. La Pergola would be great for lunch or dinner. On Friday night, band is there. Etap is owned by Accor. If you would sign up for Accor rewards, at times they have sales and Etap becomes really cheap. You can get an Ibis for Etap price.

Pretty sure we qualify as senior seniors 66&85 we have stayed at the Hotel Sibour, rue Sibour (about 1 block from Gare de l'Est twice now and are booked for third stay in March. It is basic, clean, comfortable, helpful staff, great location. It does have a tiny elevator which we never used. Rates are around 65-75 E. They have a web site. Have a wonderful trip.

Look into european chain hotel www.accorhotels.com. Huge range of prices. Budget but efficient and xtra clean w/ ensuite is Etap Hotel part of accor chain.
book online it is easy and efficient. A little more costly would be Ibis Hotel. When you need even more new & comfort and big buffet breakfasts we like Novotel hotels.
