Senior traveler in Holland

My husband will be traveling to Amsterdam next month. He is looking for lodging that won't be too expensive - budget is small. A B&B which is simple would be fine. He has arthritis - anywhere that's clean and the bed is comfortable.
A hostel maybe. He's quite active and hasn't been in Amsterdam since the 1960s when he was in the Army.

Can you help him?

I stayed at the Ibis next to central station and was pleased. I did not take breakfast, I like to walk and find the local places. It is a big box hotel without character like you may find in other places in Amsterdam. I find Amsterdam lodging expensive, he may want to consider a smaller city with quick train access to Amsterdam.
