Semmering railroad, Austria

We will be in Vienna at the very end of July. Has anyone taken the Semmeringbahn to Semmering and gone up the Hirschenkogel cable car? Any tips? Also, any advice re whether to take the rail trip on Sunday and sightsee in Vienna on Monday-or vice versa.
