We have an extra day in the Madrid area, and would like to take a side trip to either Segovia or Toledo. What do you all suggest? If it matters, we're not that into art, but would rather see some history and experience the smaller-town culture in Spain (compared to Madrid). We don't have extra time to go farther than that (Switzerland & Italy will be calling by then...).
Both are amazing, but I'd say Toledo. It is the ultimate example of a protected old city with all of what you'd hope to see. Segovia is lovely, with an incredible aquaduct but it doesn't have the same "city" feel.
Toledo hands down. It is filled with history and the combination of Jewish, Muslim and Catholic cultures. And it is a beautiful hill town. Plus the art can be taken in small doses at the churches.
Toledo. After you've eaten pig and looked at the aquaduct, you're just about done with Segovia.
Toledo!! Take the AVE train, 1/2 hour, exit the train station to the street, turn right to the bus stop. Take the bus to Plaza Zodocover, get off and walk. Cathederal, Santa Cruz Museum, St. Tome, and all the other attractions and side streets. Take the bus back to the train station, or depending on where you are, take a taxi...A great city to visit and explore.
Toledo would be our choice. Segovia is really worthwhile but the ancient capital of Spain has so much more!
Yep, agree on Toledo. However, I'll add one (perhaps unconventional) suggestion: don't do Toledo as a day trip. Why not? Because that's what virtually everyone does, and guess what? From 10 am to 4 pm, Toledo is full of day trippers (really full) - the streets are crowded, sometimes mobbed. Outside of those hours, it's empty - and a completely different experience. Wandering the skinny, twisted streets in the morning and late afternoon, your own footsteps echoing off the old walls, it's quiet and very magical. Day trippers have a different experience. With the high speed train, it's easy to overnight at Toledo and enjoy its charms without the throngs. Consider ways of working that into your plans.
Is it just me, or did anyone else find the roast suckling pig to be a huge letdown? I agree on Toledo...no doubt about it, but the aqueduct in Segovia has to be one of the greatest examples of Roman engineering you'll find anywhere...it's very impressive.
We had the suckling pig at Botin in Madrid, so we didn't get the actual whole animal brought out, but loved the dish. I would cast a vote for Toledo also. The aquaduct is a true wonder, but Toledo is such an exceedingly charming city.
We haven't been to Toledo but will not disagree that it is a cool place. We HAVE been to Segovia and loved it. Someone said that when you have seen the Acqueduct, you have seen Segovia. That is simply not so. There is a castle at the other end of town and a fantastic surrounding area that seems as if it is the middle of nowhere but is full of surprises.
Our vote goes to Segovia.
