Seeing the castles Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein

would I want to stay in Munich or Fussen to visit the castles? and where is a nice hotel around 150 to stay in Munich or Fussen we are also traveling by train. I think Fussen would be fun to stay in. Would two nights be fine? then get on train to go on to Salisburg?

Radius tours takes you out to the castles on the same train and bus you can take yourself with a Bayern-Ticket (€28 for up to 5 PP, €14 each for 2 P). To see how to get to the castles, see my webpage.

Hotel Royal (www.hotel-royal.de) is a few blocks from the main station in Munich. A double room starts at €89; all in-town hotels charge more during trade fairs.

And I agree with Steve. Füssen to Salzburg is a long trip with a change of trains in Munich. You might be better off to stay in Munich and make day trips to each place.

jana,

I agree with the others regarding which city to use as a "home base". Munich is by far a better choice as there are a lot of things you can do there once you've finished touring the Castles.

You might have a look at Hotel Uhland as it's reasonably close to the main Hbf, the rooms are very comfortable and the breakfasts are awesome!

You might at least have a look at the tours offered by Radius. Although it would have been easy to take the train to Fussen and tour the Castles on my own, I decided to go with Radius and quite enjoyed the tour. They take care of all the transportation arrangements, the admission and reservations for the "official" tour inside the Castle and provide a brief history prior to the Castle tour.

Also as previously mentioned, it will be much easier to get to Salzburg for the next leg of your journey if you stay in Munich.

Happy travels!

I'm not sure I would suggest Fussen for a home base. If you stay there the night before your visit, however, you will beat the crowds to the castles and be finished with your tours with plenty of day left for other activities.

We stayed at Gasthof zum Schluxen in Reute. It was a very nice hotel. It was on the pricey side for us, we splurged as a surprise for my daughter (since it's billed as a working farm). The working farm part was a letdown but the hotel was very nice.

We left Munich early (7:30ish) and beat the crowds to the castles and enjoyed Fussen. We then continued on to our hotel in Salzburg via Munich. Whew! That was a long day and we didn't get to our hotel until almost 10pm and were exhausted to say the least. I would recommend staying in Salzburg because it's so lovely but not on the same day you visit the castles.

I was in Fussen in 2008. We spent Sat-Tues in Munich for Oktoberfest and then drove to Fussen for Tues-Sunday. It worked perfectly for us. We did the castles one day (we walked) then we did one of Rick's day trips another day. We used one day to just relax and walk around town after a workout at the gym. We wine and schnapps tasted and had a fantastic dinner at an Italian place. On our last full day there we attended the Viehscheid in a small town (in September).

I enjoyed Fussen and found it very relaxing and a good jump off point for our south German travels. We stayed at the Hotel Sonne: http://www.hotel-fuessen.de. I would totally recommend this location.
