See Something Different in Germany in 2010

For those of you looking for something different in Germany, you might want to do some travel around the Ruhr area this year. Myriad events are taking place in towns and cities spread throughout the Ruhr, to showcase a good portion of the industry that helped make Germany what it is today. The website looks really interesting and is in English. I watched one of the videos about the exhibition on the Solar System, which was quite good. The Light Exhibitions in all the towns look interesting too. These are great for all you photographers out there.

Who knows, maybe you can find some "new Back doors".

I can't believe not a single person on this forum was interested in this enough to even respond. Considering the Rick Steves philosphy is "Europe through the Back Door", it makes me wonder just a bit.

Especially all those who are asking for interesting places that aren't packed with tourists and tour buses.

"Considering the Rick Steves philosphy is "Europe through the Back Door", it makes me wonder just a bit." I get the impression sometimes that Ricknicks want to see the same thing as every other tourist, but want it labeled "non-touristy", "cultural" or (shudder) "authentic".

PS- If it's still going on in August, I'll check it out. Thanks for the notice, Jo.

Nothing against the Ruhrgebiet but not this summer...

I've been to the Ruhr on past trips to see and visit some of the monuments, museums, sites, the Innenstadt, etc:
Duisburg --1992, 1999.

Moenchengladbach, Essen, Hamm

Dortmund--last time last summer.

I posted the same information about Ruhr2010 a month ago and got zero responses. That's okay, more fun for us! We are definitely spending time there and it looks fantastic - so much going on, and such a creative post-industrial use of space. Thanks to some great tips from Beatrix, we will see some wonderful back door things while everyone else from North America is queuing up at Neuschwanstein.

I went out and looked at the website. It was not something that I was interested in seeing. I like cities but special light exhibits are not big with me.

Plus, this is something that we can see at home. I used to commute to San Francisco. Sometimes, I would go out of my way to come in by the ocean highway just to see the lights of the city from a cliff side. That was far more interesting to me than staged light displays, be they in cities or at castles.

I do appreciate the time that you took to point out this and earlier happenings.
