Schmutzli and Krampus

I know this is only mildly related to European travel, but in the spirit of the holidays, I thought I would ask if others were aware of these "interesting" Christmas traditions. I knew about Schmutzli as Santa's sinister little helper in Switzerland, but what's up with the evil butcher in France or Krampus the devil in Germany? Are these well known helpers of St. Nicholas or just old traditions that nobody really cares about in 2010? Just curious to hear from travelers and folks currently living on our favorite continent. http://www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix?pageID=100

I don't know about those two, but the Dutch-speaking world has Zwarte Piet (Black Peter). He isn't considered sinister, but to a US citizen, he's about as politically correct as Amos and Andy.
