I am traveling to Schleswig-Holstein in mid-October. Anyone have any recommendations for authentic food or places to see? I already know I am going to Meldorf, the Battle of Hemmingstedt, and the ruins at Schleswig & Hedeby (Haithabu). Thx. John
A bit north of the Danish border on the Atlantic side is Ribe which we enjoyed for its old town center (reportedly the oldest in Denmark). Most especially we liked the cathedral which is a hodgepodge of styles on the outside but quite remarkable inside.

I really liked Schloss Gotorf, a former Danish palace. St. Peters Cathedral has parts that date back to 6th or 7th century. The Fjord is beautiful. Schleswig is a remarkably pretty small city. It's a regional capitol with an interesting history. It sits on an ancient trade route and spent a lot of it's history as part of Denmark. It's low key and not many tourists.
I was there in mid September. It was cool with some nice days and some very rainy days.
For planning purposes there is a laundromat in town (which are rare in the area).
Also Kiel is nearby which is definitely worth a visit.
