First a website: http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=318&L=3 Rick does a pretty good guide of the Middle Rhine; you can cut out the section on the Rhine to take with you. I also like the Michelin Green Guide. We do not have the patience for a boat, we took the train. A car is nice if you happen to live in Germany and have your own.

OK, maybe both. If you traveling from the north, take the train south to one of the Rhine towns (Bingen or Ruedesheim), then take the K-D boat north (down stream, so its faster) to St Goar or St Goarshausen. After you get off, train to home or next destination. That is the Rhine Gorge section of the boat's run.
