Scared about weather in Bavaria

Taking week-long trip to Germany the first week of May. We were hoping to spend a few days in Obertsdorf hiking and biking but are concerned it may be a bit early for decent weather. Can anyone comment about what to expect as far as the weather in bavaria the first week of May? Thanks!

We were in Munich in Mid may one year and it was rainy and cold (40's and 50's) for 3 of the 4 days we were there. I would suggest bringing rain gear if you plan on hiking, and layers.

Steve, While it's possible to get a good idea of the weather from historical data, especially these days there are no guarantees it will follow predictable patterns. I found that to be the case in September last year during a visit to Italy. The weather was beautiful and sunny for the most part, but I experienced just the opposite one night in Lucca, when a torrential downpour of biblical proportions occurred late one afternoon. Within a short time, the water in the streets was at least ankle height, as the storm drains couldn't handle it. This was about a month before the disastrous flooding that "hit" the Cinque Terre, so I can appreciate what it must have been like. I usually operate on the principle, "expect the best but plan for the worst". I pack both an Umbrella and Rain Poncho as well as clothes for "layering". So far that method has worked reasonably well. In that situation, I'd plan some flexibility into your Itinerary. If you find that the weather is miserable on a particular day, plan for some "inside time" that day. One possibility would be to take a day trip to Munich (~2H:25M each way via direct train). The Deutsches Museum has over 16 kM of exhibits, so you could easily spend half a day or more touring that. Happy travels!

No one can predict that far ahead. Could be warm, could be cool, could be rain. It is best to have back-up plans for rainy days or just go ahead and hike in the rain, with good rain gear on.

Last time we were in Bavaria in May, no matter how good the weather looked when we left the hotel, we could count on at least a few sudden rain squalls throughout the day. Take an umbrella whenever you go out. However, it wasnt cold that year

Steve, we were in Bavaria 4 years ago during the last week in April and first week of May - weather could not have been better, sunny in the 70's during the day, maybe 50's and 60's at night. Two years ago, in Bavaria during the first two weeks in May, same thing - wonderful weather except for the very last afternoon when it rained. I guess we were lucky both times but I would say your chances of nice weather are pretty good at that time of year.
