Sarlat is great and you'll have a good time. The Dordogne is my favorite part of France. We stayed in Beynac (about 10 km from Sarlat) at Hotel Pontet. Just google hostellerie maleville and you'll get their website.
The hotel is utterly charming without being schmaltzy and the restaurant is fantastic. We drove 100 miles out of our way just to eat there on our last trip - and it was worth it!
