I need a recommendation for hiking shoes for the pilgrimage to Campostella. Will be going in April. 6 days hiking/ 113 km.
Any good comfortable hiking shoe (don't think you need a full boot) that you would use in the hills around San Diego will work just fine. Nothing special or unusual at de Campostella other than it is a long walk. I am partial to ECCO but that is because they fit my foot very well. I would take a long extra insoles so that you can change daily and keep the shoe dry.
Hi Chris, I live in San Diego too and I walked the Camino in 2010, I will PM you. But overall what works for one person might not work for another, the key is testing shoes and socks. My boots are an inexpensive pair of Colemans I got for about $40.00 at Big 5. I personally believe in liner socks which are a thin sock worn underneath the hiking sock, during my 33 days of walking I didn't get one blister. Some people don't care for them complaining that their feet get too warm. The liners eliminate the friction that causes blisters, you can find them at REI or Adventure 16 here in SD. The majority of the Camino is single track and it is not too rough, it does get a bit rough when entering Galicia, that area can be very rocky and good stability is beneficial, but overall what you find comfortable and provides good support for your feet should suffice.
There is a forum dedicated to the Camino. You might find some good information there... http://www.caminodesantiago.me/board/el-camino-frances/ Buen camino!
