I am in the final stages of tweeking my hotel choices for my upcoming trip to Germany. I have 2 hotels in the Rhine area. One is a modest place in an old post office in Halsenbach Ehr. The owner says it is about 10 minutes drive to St. Goar. The other costing $70 more is in St. Goar, Am Markt is the name. It is on the Rhine. I feel like the first choice would be more pleasant, but I cannot figure out where it is exactly. As you can tell I am one of those who has a hard time making decision, so any input would be appreciated. Oh, the post office place is called Landgasthauf Alter Posthof. In case anyone wants to look up the 2 properties or have stayed there before!
I entered the address of the Landgasthof Posthof (your spelling was off) - Hunsrückhöhenstraße 3 - 56283 Halsenbach-Ehr - at www.viamichelin.com and pulled up a map showing its location, which is near Emmelshausen. The town is in the little-touristed area known as the Hunsrück, an area of Germany that has been largely off the beaten path for decades; it's mostly agricultural and has retained its dialect and many of its traditional ways. For some reason, I am unable to type the inn's website (German) where I got the address on this website, which doesn't seem to like the sequence of letters a-l-t-e-r. I will try to send you a pm so you can see the photos they've posted. The place looks "homey" to me but the booking.com reviews - 121 of them - are quite positive, overall. It sounds like the family that owns it is doing something right. I suspect that the reason for the high number of reviews for such a humble place is Frankfurt Hahn airport - the town lies between the airport and the Rhine and has surely experienced a boom of sorts since Ryanair began flying visitors into the area.
I had dinner at Am Markt several years ago and the owner was very nice. I was alone and after making my dinner we chatted a bit about the area. Its is located in town... If you wanted very quiet, it may not be it as its on a busy street (by St Goar standards which is not too busy). Should you stay there, there are a couple wonderful bakeries just up the street. I'm not sure how the hotel is but St Goar is a sure a nice place to spend a few days.
Thanks Mike. I cancelled a few less expensive places to go with this one. Location, location......I hope I did the right thing. I felt like Sankt Goar was pretty central. We will explore the castle ruins and do a cruise. Then off on the rest of our road trip. Germany is so full of wonderful sights that it was hard to choose. We are doing the Rhine, Heidelberg, Black Forest, Big Castle and Eagle's Nest. Sadly I do not think we will have time for Salzburg. My daughter is living in Germany for now, so who knows maybe another trip next summer! I know some of my picks are very touristy, but the seemed irresistble to me. My only concern with Am Markt is that I booked directly with them and they have no cc number or anything, so I hope they do hold my room! Check in is 2pm, also a little scary!
Check in at 2pm means you CAN check in at 2pm. You don't have to. You can certainly wait until later in the afternoon. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
In that part of Germany which I have visited a few time it seems quite common to trust the reserving party will show up. I have never had an issue. I hope it is still the same owner as he was a very nice guy. I enjoyed their small terrace for dinner. If you are traveling by train, its a fairly short walk from the train station to Am Markt. The castle is well worth a look.. I particularly enjoyed the small museum. Have a great trip, the people are unfailingly nice there and it is a scenic wonder.
