I have just booked an inexpensive room in Halsenback-Ehr. I was searching for availability for a room in Sankt Goar and was somehow directed to this, assuming it is in the area. Is anyone familiar with this place and the distance. I found another triple in Sankt Goar, but accidently booked for 1 night only. No wonder it was cheap! Now it is showing not available!
ann, I'm assuming "Sankt Goar" is the same as the "St. Goar" that's listed in the Guidebook? I've never seen it referred to in that way before. If that's in fact the place you're looking for, you may obtain better results by using the more commonly used name for the town. There are also listings for good Hotels in St. Goar in the Guidebook, which includes websites, transportation and lots of other information. Depending on what you want to see in that area, you could also stay in Bacharach (I prefer it to St. Goar). Cheers!
Sankt Goar is the real name of the town.
It isn't that close. Looking on the map, it would appear to sit a very short distance away. However, what a two dimensional road map can't demonstrate very well is that the roads from the A61 to the Rhine are actually quite long and winding as they make their descent. You certainly can't see the river from Ehr. Knowing how long it takes to descend to St. Goar from the A61, I estimate that you would be staying about a 20 minute drive away. And yes, "Sankt" is German for "Saint", just like Saint Louis and St. Louis are the same city.
Are you able to cancel your room reservation and perhaps stay in another town along the Rhine? Oberwesel would be a good one and I have to say I like it better than Sankt Goar.
I do have a reservation in Oberwesel as well. I need to be careful though, I have to remember to cancel all these bookings when I make a final decision. I am booked in Rheinfels (not the Schloss) in St. Goar (aka Sankt Goar!), but I booked double and we are 3 persons, so I am afraid there will be a problem there. They showed a triple briefly, but it is gone! So Oberwesel, Sankt Goar or Bacharach are what I am zoning in on! I felt like Sankt Goar would be fun for my younger daughter. Bacharach looks a little more sedate. I of course will visit Bacharach while there regardless or vice versa depending on where we land!
I was in the are 36 years ago..don't remember it much. I remember Germany being the favorite in our entire European journey. I think we did Bremen, Koln, Bingen, Trier.
"I think we did Bremen, Koln, Bingen, Trier." Bingen? Maybe Ruedesheim, across the river. As for Hotel Rheinfels (www.hotelrheinfels.de). It looks like they have four Mehrbettzimmer (room for 3 or 4). I'm guessing you booked through a booking website. Sometimes they don't have access to all the rooms. Write to the hotel at [email protected] and explain that you have a reservation for a double but have three people. Maybe they have a triple not accessible to the booking website. Or, it looks like the rooms are pretty large. Perhaps they have a rollaway. Did you indicate three people when you booked? BTW, their website indicates they are a 3* hotel. According to the star system, they are supposed to have someone on staff who speaks English, so you should be able to write to them in English.
Stayed ay Hotel Hauser in St Goar for 5 nights this past May; very reasonable basic lodging with excellent restaurant and with rooms facing the Rhine.
In Bacharach, Im Malerwinkel has triple rooms for 78 Euros if you are staying two nights. Here's their website: www.im-malerwinkel.de
