San Sebastian and Outdoors -day drives?

Hi all - we (family with two late teen kids) are in San Sebastian and have a rental car - any recommendations for pretty day drives with short walks and views? Maybe along coast on N634, or up another road into the mountains? I have the Michellin 573 regional map for the area. Would like to avoid too much driving within complicated cities - pretty tricky driving around here in cities with the limited street signs, kind of reminds me so far of driving in Costa Rica :D . Thanks for any tips! Mark

We enjoyed driving into France through St. Jean-de-Luz and then spending time on the beach in Biarritz. It's not very far--less than an hour to drive.

Rick Steves has a tour to Basque Country this fall. You might check out the itinerary for that tour for ideas for your daytrips. His book on SPAIN 2008 also could be a good resource.

Thanks for the tips! Today we drove inland to Lairritz and went part way up Mount Txindoki - very nice though a bit strenuous hiking in parts so do not wear flip flops if you go - we didnt have time for the two+ hours to the tip top, but still some great views and nice picnicking at some tables at the start of the hiking area. Tomorrow we head up N634 to the coast west of here. Looks like some great natural beauty, and maybe some nice waves :) to be found there. Note: If you can find them somehow, there are some very nice tourist resource guides for Northern Spain- try Basquecountrytourism.net and gipuzkoturismo.net and they might have/send some guides with general intructions and descriptions with pictures. We found copies of the guides (in English, other languages avail) in a little port city east of San Sebastian we took a short water taxi too (San Pedro?). Nice little day hike there up in to some hills too on the west side of the ports inlet.
Anyway, now I think we have enough to do for the rest of our time here, but if anyone has any questions let me know. Happy adventuring!!! :D peace
ps - I am using a tiny Asus eeePC - used it at our Paris hotel last week, and now at my wife's penpals house - very easy to travel with, nice for email if ya gotta, and searching for adventures, and figuring out how to get places.
