Salzkammergut - Wolfgangsee

I have 2 days in Salzburg and was thinking of spending a day in the Wolfgangsee area but unsure where to go. Which of these place do you recommend? Strobl, St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen. I've googled pictures of each area and liked St Gilgen very much. Besides visiting the lake, is there any attractions that can be done by foot or public transport? Is there a town centre I can visit or something?

I was thinking of a half day trip to the Eagle's Nest or the Salt Mine. Is any of this do-able within the same day visiting Wolfgangsee? This is my first trip to Salzburg. Please advice. Thanks.

There's not much to do in Strobl, but St Wolfgang and St Gilgen are both worth a visit. If you need public transportation, St Gilgen would be the best choice since it's the nearest town to Salzburg and local buses leave from Salzburg about every hour (you catch a bus at a bus stop on Mirabellplatz behind the Mirabell Gardens - not at the bus station. St Gilgen has a beautiful waterfront on the lake with a park and a fountain. You can take a boat ride on the lake or there is usually a cable car running nearby you can take up a mountain for a good panoramic view of the area. There is also a cute little town square with a Mozart statue (his mom grew up here. The eagle's nest and Salt Mine are in the opposite direction from the Wolfgangsee and could be done the same day with a fast car.

We did St Wolfgang, Mondsee, and the salt mine in Halstatt in the same day.

How much is it to get to St Wolfgang and St Gilgen from Salzburg? I'm confused with the pricing system and also the transportation. I was thinking of going up the Schafberg or Zwolferhorn. I prefer if I can do some light walking. Can this be done in a day? If time permits, I was thinking of going to Mondsee.

If I purchase the Salzburg card, is it necessary to get the Salzkammergut card? Or should I buy a 1 day Salzburg card and 1 day Salzkammergut card?

My favorite place out of Salzburg is Zell am See. The first time I went there I went on the Panoramic Tour of the Sound of Music. I loved it and got to see the lake area that way. I have been back twice since then in a car. If you do go that way, be sure and go up the Smitten cable car. It is so beautiful up there and well worth the cost. You see scenery there that you can't see in town. There were two or three hundred paragliders taking off and it was such great fun watching them. We did some easy walking down to a cute restaurant for lunch. It was my best day out of the month in Europe.

Ron,

I think the content of the message was seeking your advice whether I should do the lakes and towns at the Wolfgangsee or going up the Untersberg. I understand that if I purchase the Salzburg card, the trip up to the Untersberg would be free.

If I were to do the Untersberg, do you think it's possible to do the salt mine tour? If so, can the salt mine tour be done without a guided tour? How do I get there?

I would be going to Mount Titlis, Jungfraujoch, Murren & Schilthorn after my trip in Salzburg. I was thinking of doing a non-strenuous hike from Grutschalp to Mürren, then from there I would take the (railway/cable car), whichever that gets me to Schilthorn.

As for lakeside, I would be visiting Lake Lucerne and if time permits, Lake Brienz.

I love sceneries and I'm not able to decide whether I should do Untersberg or the Wolfgangsee. Is there any activities that can be done on Untersberg?

Is all this info available at the Tourist Information Center?

You can do the salt mine in Berchestgarden and the Eagle's nest in one day. I did it with a tour company. We started the day at the saltmine (early) then we had lunch in town and meet the tour company at the TI in Berchestgarden. We toured the bunkers and the eagles nest. My husband made reservations before we left the U.S.A. We also took a tour from Salzburg to Wolfgangsee. It was the sound of music tour. They take you to the lake district. It is a full day on the bus. You could drive it too. I like Zell am See also. Beautiful lake, and you take the cable car up to the top for great views.
