Anyone travel from Salzburg to Venice? Day/Night? what worked well and what would you recommend? Thought about night train or other. Thanks everyone.
It's only about a 6½ hour trip ( change in Villach) and the scenery is spectacular.... go in the daytime.
If you want to attempt a straight shot, it is about 4 hours of fairly easy driving (leaving the Venice Tronchetto mid morning). We stopped and spent about half a day in Udine (which is actually a lovely town and I wish we could have spent more time there)before continuing on the rest of the way and arriving in Salzburg with time to check into our hotel, freshen up, and then stroll through town to find a restaurant. Going north from Udine, the autostrada starts to look more like a US interstate (lots of trucks and tractor trailers). Once you hit Austria, the roads are in exceptional shape, and the views are pretty nice (though in some stretches, it can be a little dizzying). We kept the rental car upon arriving to Salzburg and used it to visit the lake towns in the region, including Bad Ischl and of course Hallstatt.
