Salzburg to Munich

What is the cheapest, easiest way to get from Salzburg to Munich as a day trip? Is there any pass that would cover this?

Yes, a Bayern-Ticket will cover your travel on regional trains (RE, RB) from Salzburg to Munich. It's valid for all day on/off travel (until 3 AM the following morning any day, after 9 AM workdays) for up to five people on regional trains in Bavaria, and costs just €28 (€20 for the single traveler version). There are regional trains hourly between Salzburg and Munich and they take about 2 hours, only ½ longer than express trains. It will also cover all travel by public transportation of the MVV (Munich metro).

If you want to get to Munich earlier, there is the RT Freizeit-Ticket (in German), which is valid for 1 person for travel on express trains (IC/EC) from midnight until 3 AM the following morning, any day except Friday. It costs €30 per person round trip at an automat, more at a counter. It is not valid for on/off use of transit in the MVV.

For two people, you could travel anytime on express trains with Sparpreis-Tickets for €58, but that would require advance purchase of train-specific, limited refundability tickets.

You can also use the Bayern-Ticket for travel before 9 by purchasing full fare P-P tickets to the first station after 9 AM.
