From what I see, at Salzburg Bus Terminal, I can catch Bus #150 (pay bus fare) going to Bad Isch, stop at Bad Isch bus station, walk across over to the Bad Ish train station and (pay train fare) hop on the train to Hallstatt. Afterwards, get off at Hallstatt station and (pay ferry fare) take the ferry called the Stefanie to cross the lake and land in the the town. Now do I have to pay 3 separate times (bus, train, ferry) getting to Hallstatt? Or 6 separate times for roundtrip? What is the approximate fare for each? Is there a combination ticket/pass that I can buy that will cover the entire own-way or roundtrip journey? thanks....Marlene
In the first place, the town is Bad Ischl. (might be helpful to spell it right when finding schedules.) I made a similar trip in 2009, but I made an intermediate stop in Mondsee (SOM wedding church). From Mondsee to Bad Ischl, there was an change of buses in St. Gilgen. Then, because my lodging was in Lahn, and the bus goes directly there, I took a bus from Bad Ischl to Lahn. It was one ticket from Bad Ischl to Lahn, but I had to change buses on the way. So, I paid bus fares when I boarded in Salzburg, Mondsee, St. Gilgen, and Bad Ischl. The total fare in 2009, for 4 tickets on 5 buses, was about 17€. According to the Austrian Rail website, either the all-rail connection via Attnang-Puchheim or the bus-rail connection will take about the same length of time, 2½ hrs. Of course, with the bus-rail connection, you might get to see more of the Salzkammergut. The all rail connection, including an IC from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim, will cost 24,60€ for one person. If there are two to five of you, you can use regional trains (~3 hrs) and an Einfach Raus Ticket, for 32€. The Einfach Raus Ticket does not cover buses.
Marlene, As Lee mentioned, the rail trip requires a change at Attnang-Puchheim. I prefer just using one mode of transport, but if you enjoy Bus rides that's certainly an option. If you decide to use the rail option, I'd suggest buying the ticket for your ongoing journey at the same time, as the small station in Hallstatt is unmanned. When you arrive at the rail station in Hallstatt, you'll walk down the small path to the dock and take Stefanie across the lake. Be sure to have your Camera at hand, as the views are spectacular! The trip is relatively short (about 15 minutes as I recall), and I believe the current fare is €2.40. You can buy a ticket from the driver. Happy travels!
If you walk south along Seestrasse about a km to Lahn, where the incline to the salt mine is and where the road comes out of the bypass tunnel, there is a bus stop with a bus that goes around the end of the lake to the Bahnhof in Obertraun. The fare in 2009 was 1,30€. That station is (at least was, in 2009) manned, and you can buy your ticket there.
Did this trip about a month ago, but for the life of me, I can't remember the cost. I looked at my notes and the costs I have are 9.60, 3.80 and 2.40 for the bus, train and ferry. These are for one person and one way. Except for the ferry, I do remember that the fares were higher. As someone mentioned, the station at Bad Ischl is manned and gave us the option to buy a return ticket. Glad I did, because on the way back, people were trying to buy a ticket thru a machine and were having trouble.
