salzburg to Garmisch

I will be flying into Salzburg with a girlfriend, doing the Sound of Music Tour and leaving that evening for Garmisch. Am I able to purchase a Bavarian ticket in Salzburg and be able to use it to get out of Salzburg or do I need a different or additional ticket. Looking at the Bahn site I need to go to Munich and than change trains Garmisch. Correct?

Yes, you can use the Bayern-Ticket (Bavaria Ticket) to go from Salzburg (in Austria, but considered a DB border station) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on regional trains, and you would have to change trains in Munich.

Just understand that the SOM tours in Salzburg are not very authentic. If you want to do them anyway, fine, but nothing you will see is real. The original Von Trapp home was not used in the movie, and the house from the movie is not shown on the tour. They show you Leopoldskron, which was not used in the movie, and the gazebo scenes were actually shot in a sound stage in hollywood. But you can see a lot of Salzburg (the fortress, the old town, and the nunnery where Marie taught) on your own.

Thanks for the SOM information I actually was there last year and did one. My friend would like to see it.

The second part of my question was would I be able to get the Bavaria ticket in Salzburg to use it to Munich on to Garmisch? Someone did tell me I could use it since it was a bounding. Do I just ask the ticket counter or purchase from the machine?

Thanks, Angela

I thought that the gazebo is now by the playground at Hellbrunn. I took a picture of it and everything!

I've never done the Sound of Music tour but Salzburg is one of my favorite cities. It's beautiful and has a lot to do within walking distance of the center.

This is an interesting question!
Of course, the SoM tours aren't very authentic, but, as I have been told, utterly charming.
The SoM is a musical about the von Trapp family, produced in Hollywood, replete with artistic freedom and only partially true to real life.
Authentic in this case, is therefore impossible ;-))
But they are very authentic in the sense of the Hollywood production: you will visit various of these locations on the tour, and cannot get any more authentic than that.

I lived in the area just after the film was first screened and have returned many times. Two years ago I took my grown daughters to Salzburg and of course we did the SOM tour,in the wintertime. It was wonderful, as it always has been. You get to see much of what was in the movie (the nunnery, the church where the wedding was filmed), much of the beautiful scenery from one of the worlds loveliest cities, some of the beauty of the Salzkammergut including the village where Mozarts mother was born,etc.......the actual Gazebo was said to have been in Hollywood but the facsimile at the chateau was beautiful and I would challenge someone to be able to tell the difference. Movies are about being in a state of wonder and imagination; with that said, a true SOM admirer would never be disappointed in this tour.
