We have four days to travel from Salzburg to Baden-Baden In late July. Probably would go via Fussen/Reutte area to Bodensee north shore to Freiburg/Staufen to Baden-Baden. Any thoughts on what cities to stay in, where on the lake to stay? Will probably have a car. If we stay on Bodensee for two days is that enough time to get from Salzburg to Baden-Baden?
One of the scenic rides in Germany is the Schwarzwaldbahn between Triberg and Hausach. There are trains that go hourly direct from Konstanz to Baden-Baden via that route. That's the way I would do it. Twenty years ago I went from Konstanz to Freiburg via Titisee, then to Heidelberg. A few years ago I went from Karlsruhe almost to Bodensee (Immendingen) via the Schwarzwaldbahn. I would definitely prefer the latter route. If you take one of the many regional trains on that route, you can use a €29 Drei-Löwen (Baden-Württemberg) Ticket for up to five of you all the way from Bodensee to Baden-Baden.
You can get from füssen to the Bodensee easily by rail. Just go northwest west to Kempten and south to Lindau. However, a more interesting route would be through Oberstdorf and the Kleinwalsertal. If you want to spend the day in Füssen and leave by bus at about 5 PM, there is a bus that goes through Pfronten to Oberjoch, down the mountain in front of Hindelang, and then to Oberstdorf around 19:00. You could spend the night in Oberstdorf and visit the Kleinwalsertal the next day, before going on to Lindau.
John;
We've stayed at Hotel Fischerhaus Garni both times we visted Meersburg am Bodensee. http://www.fischerhaus-meersburg.de/ We love it there. They have basic but clean rooms and they include breakfast. It is with in walking distance of town. Meersburg is a great walking town.
Thanks for the info. Has anyone experience in the other towns on the Germany side of the lake?
Besides Meersburg (my first choice), Konstanz, and Lindau are really the favorites. Make sure you stop by Insel Mainau with it's lovely gardens.
I agree completely with Kathy ... Meersburg is amazing, and the gardens at Mainau! While you're in Baden-Baden ... invest a half day at the Roman-Irische baths! The showers, dry heat, steam heat, warm pools, cool pools, and massage will make a totally new and renewed person of you!
Agree w/ Andy & Kathy; whatever you do DON'T miss the Friedrishbad (Roman Irish baths). Memorable experience, to say the least! Just posted here a few days ago to someone else w/ ?s re: Baden-Baden, and told them same thing. It's around a 3 hour spa experience consisting of multiplle cold/hot steam rooms, pools, plunges, massage, showers, saunas, etc. It's very easy, you just follow the numbered, ordered "steps" clearly marked on the wall. All culminates with you lying on a raised platform in a dead-silent room, where an attendent bundles you under a sheet & blanket. When you leave, you'll feel like a million bucks. And a great hotel suggestion; Hotel am Markt, as Rick suggests in his guidebook. On a quiet square across from a church (the bells stop around 10 pm; don't recall this being a problem at all), and a few min walk to Friedrishbad. Very clean/comfortable rooms, very helpful staff and great, traditional German breakfast each AM. And very reasonably priced. It's a real winner. http://www.hotel-am-markt-baden.de/en/
Friedrichshafen is interesting for the Zeppelin Museum. Take the shuttle train from Friedrichshafen Hbf to Friedrichshafen Hafen BHF
Ya. We already have plans to hit the baths in Baden-Baden. We are there almost a week for my wife's convention. We happen to be staying at the Hotel am Markt. They have a deal for three or more days including entry into the two spas.
