Salzburg stay in old town or outside of city

For Salzburg. Would appreciate your opinions on whether to stay in the old town (more expensive) or outside of town (15-20 min bus ride to city center, every 15 min til midnight). I will have a car and parking in the city is 14E per day. Parking free outside of city. Staying 3 nights.
Would like to see Old Town sights, Eagles Nest, and Halstatt. As well Sound of Music tour. I am staying in old town in Prague and Vienna.

Thank you very much

We always stay in town, you can walk everywhere and it is just the most wonderful place ever to explore. We have always stayed at the Vier Jahreszeiten. Breakfast is included. The tours pick you up and bring you back and the people there are great. The Eagles Nest is really good to see and we even enjoy the Sound of Music Tour. They can fix you up at the hotel for anything you care to do. We always take the train and have never driven there so I cant be any help with that. This hotel is walking distance to the train station. Have a great time.

Last August I stayed in Freilassing at Hotel Rupertus. Nice place, owner speaks English. The trip into town from the Freilassing Bahnhof takes a few minutes and costs €2,10. There is also a bus from in front of the Hotel into Salzburg.

Forget the SOM tour. It's a tourist trap. Everything significant from the movie, that still exists in Salzburg, is readily accessible without a tour.

The Eagles' Nest is in Berchtesgaden, 45 min away via the Watzmann Express bus from the Salzburg Hbf. Or take the train from Freilassing.

You can get to Hallstatt either with the train via Attnang-Puchheim or by bus (#140, Haltestelle #5 in the Bahnhofsvorplatz).

I like to stay in the center because it's such a walkable city. I stay at Istitute San Sebastian which is cheap but more like a really quiet hostel.

Definitely stay in the city. It is so very charming that you want to see it by day but also get to know it more intimately, at night. The only caveat? Be careful not to stay too close to a church if you're a light sleeper. I didn't notice a thing but my husband said he woke up every single hour throughout the night...
