Salzburg Questions

I'll be arriving in Salzburg on June 11 after three weeks in Germany and 10 days in Vienna. My flight home is from Munich on June 19. My tentative plan is to take the train to Salzburg, spend perhaps three nights, take the train to Prien am Chiemsee (looks like that is about halfway to Munich) spend another two nights until the 16th and then go on to Munich and spend the rest of the time in Munich. Question 1: Can someone recommend a small hotel or bed and breakfast REALLY close to public transportation. I'd prefer to be downtown. I'd feel less isolated; I'm travelling solo and, due to age and infirmities, will usually turn in very early and, if I'm lucky and there's Wifi, snuggle up to my Kindle. Question 2: What day trips (Berchtesgaden, Koenigsee, others?) can be undertaken without having to walk more than half a mile or so one-way between places to rest (café, restaurant, bench by the side of the road). I cannot manage steep roads. Question 3: I wonder if the Sound of Music tour would be a good sight-seeing option. However, I don't care about the actual Sound of Music thing and would hate to have to listen to commentary from a guide, so, if they all have talking guides, is there another option? Maybe a scenic bus ride to another town and back? I'm just interested in the scenery.
Question 4: Can someone suggest good rainy day options when side trips are not feasible?

If you are not really interested in the Sound of Music, then I think the tour would be overpriced.

Even if you were interested in SOM, the tour is overpriced, considering that they show you a bunch of stuff not related to the movie, and most SOM related sites in Salzburg are easily available and mostly free (or inexpensive). You can easily walk around the old town and see many sites from the movie (the residenz, where they hung the huge Nazi flag after the Anschluß, for example). Mirabell palace, with the Pegasus statue and the do-re-mi steps is a short walk or a bus ride from the old town. You can take the incline up to the fortress (Hohensalzburg) and back. If you do go to Berchtesgaden, Königssee and the Eagles Nest are accessible by bus. There are also buses (hourly, I believe) from the Berchtesgaden Hbf up to the town. Otherwise it is a bit of a strenuous walk.

Hi Anna, for a day trip whether rainy or not, I suggest the spa at Bad Ischl, which you can google if you're interested ("Salzkammergut Therme", their website has everything in English too). Buses leave from Südtiroler Platz, right in front of the Salzburg central train station hourly on the :15s, I think (you can run the numbers at oebb.at and the ~90 minute ride is pretty scenic), and drop you off at Bad Ischl train station... just cross the street heading away from the station and walk about 100 meters and you're there. Newly renovated, salt water pools indoor and outdoor (connected), very clean, very soothing warm water, very mellow. Rent a big thick robe, bring your Kindle, take advantage of the lounge chairs. We have always bought a four hour ticket then wanted to stay longer... It's an awesomely relaxing day and will have you feeling good. Bad Ischl is a nice little walkable town, too. Have fun!

Thanks to all of you for your replies! Wont do the SOM tour and am glad to hear about the other options. Bad Ischl sounds just what I could use after walking around Vienna for ten days....Thanks again, Anna
