Salzburg & Prague - How to split up time?

We land in Munich early morning in mid May & head to Salsburg by train (coming from Krakow). We have 6 nights between Salzburg (2) & Prague (4). We are transferring between 2 towns with a private driver and doing a stop over in Cesky Krumlov for several hours. Researching Salzburg we'd like to do one of the two ice caves as well as one salt mine. My 2 20+ girls want to do a luge & we would love to visit a gorge (recommended by Lee here) near Berschgaden. Salzburg itself, just interested in wandering Old Town. A busy schedule is not a problem, but trying to figure out best logistics to accomplish as much as possible in 1.5 days is challenging so wondering if staying 1 more night in Salzburg & only 3 nights in Prague, if that's too short in Prague. So far in Prague we know we'll visit the castle, wander Old Town, Jewish Quarter and a couple of evening things. Would appreciate suggestions on which salt mine & cave combo would be most efficient & although expensive be better to rent a car in Salzburg while there or still feasible with bus/train. And ... would we regret losing a night in Prague by increasing a night in Salzburg?

Kathy - I personally did a day trip tp Salzburg from Vienna and the guide had told us that this was sufficient. If you go by this then you do not need more than a day in Salzburg. Not sure about Prague though as I have not been there.

Hi Kathy By what you have currently you will only have 1 full day in Prague. Your drive and stop in Cesky Krumoff will take a whole day. It is a 5 hour drive between the two cities. I usually keep my travel to max 4 hours hotel to hotel. I would suggest you fly into Prague from Krakow. Then go to Salzburg. Salzburg has a lot to offer, they have many tours out of town. One of my favorite places to visit was the Trick Fountains. When we were in Salzburg we wished we had more time. We spend 2 nights there, and missed alot. Not sure how long your trip is, where else you are going to. And were you are fliying into and out of. All this might help. But I do have to question going to Prague. It is a long drive to get there and back, Unless your flying home from there then no problem. Golden rules I go by, Min 2 nights in one place. Max 4 hours hotel to hotel. Otherwise you don't feel like your not seeing anything, and alway's traveling. Good Luck

Salzburg is absolutely worth stopping at. If you only have one day you can cover the main part of old town. For trips outside the Salzburg area, I would look at the different companies who do mini van tours from Salzburg.
