Salzburg or Vienna?

We're planning on spending 4 nights either in Salzburg or Vienna. Besides Vienna being the number one place to live, and Salzburg having a strong Mozart theme, I know nothing about the two cities. Which is why I come to you guys for advice!

My buddy and I are in our early 20s, and wanted to go to the city with a younger demographic. We don't mind taking tours but by the time we arrive, we would have taken tours in 5 different cities. So, taking a break from tours to just walk around neighborhoods would be nice. A stronger local identity rather than being tourist-oriented is key.

So, Salzburg or Vienna?

I love Salzburg and I don't do the SOM stuff. I don't think you need four nights in Salzburg, it's a pretty small city and everything is within walking distance. Vienna has more to see and can easily consume four nights.

I like to stay in Institute San Sebastian in Salzburg. It's a college dorm but really quiet. There is a hostel nearer the train station that is much younger oriented.

Anywhere you go (even college towns) you're likely to see older tourists.

You're comparing a city of 150,000 to a city of 1.5 million. Both places are fun and interesting, but there is far more to see and do in Vienna.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm gonna plan for Vienna and try to do a day or overnight trip to Salzburg.

I havne't been to Vienna, but based on reviews I've seen of those who've been there, I would base there. Made a day trip to Salzburg in the past, and that was all we felt we really needed. A nice visit, and we were able to see everything we wanted to.

Vienna has a great cafe scene and if you take the train to the suburbs (15-20 min ride) to visit the heuringen (sp?) for music and wine it is a lot of fun. Also, you are close to Wachau region (1 hr west of Vienna) which is beautiful and has quaint villages (some touristy, some not).
