Any thoughts between the two places, as to the one that would be a better bet for a couple days in December? We've decided to go to one or the other for the Christmas markets and overall holiday feel, and they both seem to be an easy train ride from Paris, so any help deciding would be much appreciated!
Amara, I have been to Strasbourg in December, and their Christmasmarket is huge. I have been to Salzburg but not in December. Personally, I like Salzburg better than Strasbourg as a city. The advantage of Salzburg is that Bavaria and the Austrian Alps are all nearby. The advantage of Strasbourg is that the Black Forest and wine country are all nearby.
So, pick which ever you think would be best. Again, Strasbourg's Christmasmarket is huge! I'm not sure about Salzburg's. But in general I found the German and French Christmasmarkets to have a very different feel to them, even if the basic idea is the same.
Strasbourg is the shorter train ride from Paris. It's a lovely city and it would even allow you a visit to Freiburg on the foothills of the Black Forrest, for some even more romantic Xmas feeling. Salzburg is one of the most romantic cities but it's an almost 9 hours train ride from Paris whereas Strasbourg and Freiburg are under 3 hours.
Salzburg! It is a wonder city. Easy walking to all the sites and the food is marvelous!!! If their market is anything like Innsbruck or Vienna, it is great. I will be there in late Nov. and will let you know.
I loved Salzburg. It is such a beautiful area. Think of the openning scenes and backdrop in the movie "The Sound of Music". If you are going to Salzburg I wonder if a plane from Paris would be better then a long train ride. You'll have to ask others opinion of that. I did Strasbourg region on one trip and Salzburg on another. I would love to go back to see more of Salzburg some day.
