Salzburg or Rothenburg on a Sunday

I have two choices for the part of my trip that falls on Sunday: Salzburg or Rothenburg. I will do the other town on Saturday. I know Rick says in his book that just about everything is closed on Sundays. I looked up the famous Christmas store (Kathe Wohlfahrt) in Rothenburg and they are indeed closed on Sunday. Is it correct to assume that all the shops in Salzburg will be closed on Sunday as well?

Where would you choose to be on Sunday, Salzburg or Rothenburg?

Thanks!

Andy, The first time I went to Salzburg I totally forgot that it was Sunday. Walked into the Cathedral and into one my fondest memories of Europe. Every Sunday they have a full orchestra and amazing choir. People were coming and going in the back, but I think it would be much better to take a seat and enjoy the entire service.

Since Salzburg is bigger, you will have better luck finding things to do there on a Sunday.

Hi Andy,

I'd also suggest Rothenburg for Saturday and Salzburg for the Sunday.

It's unanimous. Thank you.

Salzburg - it is a larger city with a living need for food, lodging, and shopping (even on Sunday). Save Rothenburg for the Saturday. There are Christmas shops now going year-round in many places, so unless you are dead-set on collecting special nut crackers, Wohlfahrt's would not be a priority for me.
