Salzburg or Innsbruck area-where would you go?

In Munich the last week of August. Have 2 extra days. Would like to stay in a small but interesting town with access to Salzburg or Innsbruck. Where would you go (Salzburg or Innsbruck), what town would you stay in and any lodging recommendations?

I'd go to Salzburg. There are many things to see within the old town area and across the river (the fortress, Mirabell palace and gardens) as well as Hellbrun and other places of interest farther out.

Hi Dave,

Interesting...You don't state if this is with a car or not, but...I do like Salzburg much better than Innsbruck, it's not even close. We stayed at Hotel Kirchenwirt in Puch, Austria which is about 15 min. from Salzburg.
On the other hand... Hall in Tirol (6 miles east of Innsbruck) is one our favorites. In Hall in Tirol, you can't beat (IMO) the Gasthof Badl. Great place to stay with or without a car. Very easy 5 minute walk to the beautiful old town of Hall in Tirol and/or the train station.
Another option within visiting distance (45 min. drive) of Innsbruck is Mittenwald, Germany. Gorgeous village surrounded by mountains. Also a very easy 5 min. walk to Mittenwald's old center from the train station. We stayed twice ('05 and '06) at Pension Schwalbennestl, which we can highly recommend.

salzburg will have cheaper hotels and you can still visit innsbruck by train 1.5hrs away.

If you will be away from Munich for two days, and you will not be driving a car, go to Salzburg. A train trip from Munich to Salzburg is a pleasant two hour trip. In Salzburg I recommend visting the Residenz art galleries. (In "new" Salzburg).

Salzburg..hands down. It is a beautiful, smallish city, with history. Do the Mozart Concert Dinner. You will not regret it

Innsbruck has better mountain scenery... but Salzburg is better in just about every other manner. I agree with everyone else, Salzburg!
