Salzburg Music Festival

We will be in Salzburg at the start of the music festival this year for 3 days. We already have our lodging. We are staying south of old town on Moosstrasse. Should we book any festival concerts before hand via the web site? Any suggestions? Must see things vs. things to avoid?

I was hoping that someone might have info on reserving for the concerts during the music festival.

It's been many years since we were in Salzburg at the time of the music festival, but yes, I would suggest that if there's something that you particularly want to attend, that you book it ahead of time. I believe that we booked 1 or 2 events ahead of time, then bought tickets to one of the palace concerts, which are smaller venues, usually a chamber group, when we were there. We attended an opera at the music festival. We're not really opera fans, but it was a very special experience to attend a Mozart opera in Salzburg. Many people were dressed up, as were we, but I think there were also people there who were not.

If you know when you'll be there, I'd book the tickets. We were there a few years ago with our young son. When we first started looking, there were cheap seats in the 10 euro range. When we finally nailed down our dates, the only tickets left were in the 100 euro range. Way to much for a 3-year-old who would probably only make it to intermission.
