Salzburg & Munich restaurants

We are traveling in the next few weeks - any recommendations for restaurants (besides beer gardens - have that covered!). We're looking for mid-priced places, both regional and any type of ethnic food. Thanks! Joanne

Joanne, I dined at Opatija when I was in Munich a few years ago, and looking forward to trying it again this fall. It was a busy place, but I felt the food and service were both great. You might check out their reviews on Trip Advisor. I had a nice lunch at a Greek restaurant in Salzburg (close to the Funicular, but unfortunately can't remember the name. Happy travels!

Hey Joanne, when are you going? I leave for Munich on May 1st. The Fruhlingsfest should be going on in Munich if that interests you. There is another recent post regarding restaurants that I listed a couple that I enjoy. Which beer gardens are you planning to see?

Hofbrauhaus and Augustiner Braustuben are both beer halls, although Hofbrauhaus does have a courtyard beer garden. If you want a great beer garden experience try the Hirschgarten or Augustiner Keller. You can reach both via the Tram 17 (easy to catch from in front of the main train station). If you are near the Englisher Garten, either the Chinese Tower or Seehaus are good choices.

Joanne, Yes, the Hofbräuhaus is a beer hall, but if you want to have a good, inexpensive lunch, that's available too. Go upstairs for a quiet, private lunch to avoid all that noise below.

Hi Rob, We're going mid-April. So far we are planning on Hofbrauhaus (of course), Augustinian Braustuben and will probably ask around for others. Will also be trying some taverns and small restaurants. I'll let you know where we went when we get back. Regards,
Joanne

I do not think the Hofbrauhaus is a particularly good choice for food. I've eaten there 3 times now (the last 2 not by my choice). It's great to stop in for a beer and to see the exhibits upstairs, but the food is overpriced and mediocre to decent but you can do better elsewhere. On the other hand, the service is friendlier than many other places, probably because they cater to tourists. The Augustiner Keller has far better brauhaus food IMO, and it's cheaper. The portions are huge - consider splitting a plate. It's the better of all the Augustiner options in Munich, IMO. The Vitualkenmarkt (lol spelling) is my go-to lunch option (in good weather especially). You have different options, most of it traditional "fast" food, all of it tasty. You can even get organic wurst and leberkaese! The RS recommended Andescher Am Dom has really fantastic traditional food, prices a little higher than other places but the quality was a notch above too, in my opinion. Popular with tourists AND locals (as is the Augustiner Keller). If you want to sample famous Nurnberger bratwurst, the Gloeckel Am Dom next door has the best in Munich.

In 2008, we ate at St Pauls Stubb n beer in Salzburg. It was in the RS guide in 2008, I don't have a current guide. It was very good. We got a traditional pasta dish. it is kind of tucked away beneath Hohensalzburg and we had a bit of trouble finding it with the RS map, but it was worth the effort. There are no views or anything, in fact it is kind of a dark place. But the prices and food were very good and we were glad we took the time to find it.

Some beer gardens offer better food than others of course but don't forget to hit up the Vitualkenmarkt for a quick brat. And of course a free beer on one of Munich's popular breweries. They take turns offering free mugs of their famous brew for all to enjoy. Just look for the long line of thirsty beer drinkers.

Joanne- I edited my above reply. I accidentally called St Paul's a beer garden. It is not It is a pub/restaurant. No gardens anywhere around. It was a simple place with good character and better food.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. I will post some reviews when I get back - always good info from the RS people! Joanne
