We are going to Salzburg & Munich the second week of April. Any general comments about the weather - not sure what kind of outerwear to bring - anorak, leather jacket, puffer? Layering is fine - hate to be overheated with one heavy jacket. Thanks!
It probably won't have warmed up much by mid-April. I'd bring a shell and two warm items to layer as needed. For me they would be a non-bulky wool sweater and a 100 weight (lightweight) full-zip polar fleece. I prefer putting layers of natural fiber between any tech layers to keep the static down. I'd also pack a wool cap and some gloves. If it's really cold, you can add a scarf and layer over a couple of t-shirts. If it's starting to warm up, you can use just one of your warm layers over a top. If the weather is REALLY cold right before you travel, throw in some silk long underwear. They don't take up space or weight in your carry-on but will really help keep you warm.
Last April, the first spring when I lived here, I was doing yard work in shorts and a T shirt. Before I moved here, I visited every April for several years in a row, and I only recall needing anything more than a light jacket once, and that was for a visit to Russia. It will likely be considerably colder in Boston than in Munich.
Thanks everyone! Layering it is - and I'll be sure to check the weather just before we go.
It is indeed all about the layering. While I wasn't there in April I can say that both cities had a big temp. difference when I visited the end of Sept. Munich was warm (70F) and clear while Salzburg the same day was cold (40F) and raining. I was glad I had a shell and and some layers to go on underneath.
We were in both the first week of April this year. Only a light jacket was needed, but if I remember several locals commented it was unseasonably warm.
