My husband and I will be in Salzburg in the Spring and were thinking of also spending a day in Innsbruck. Would we be smarter just to take a day trip from Salzburg to Innsbruck? Most of our travels between cities will be by rail. Thanks.
I enjoyed Innsbruck and would recommend it. The train is just under two hours and is direct.
The Spring train schedule isn't available yet and a day trip would depend on that schedule.
I'll take the contrary view here. The scenery around Innsbruck is some of the most stunning in Europe. It has a charming old town... and the rest of the city is of a rather soulless industrial character. Much more fun in the winter though, with all the skiing... So yes, I would say stay in Salzburg, and visit Innsbruck, if you must, as a daytrip. Personally, I find many of the small villages nestled in the mountains around Innsbruck much more interesting, but you would have trouble visiting these without a car.
Hi Linda,
My opinion.... The scenery around Innsbruck is beautiful and much different than the "mountains" around Salzburg! My opinion, spend a night there or in neighboring Hall in Tirol, our favorite (and in Rick's guide book). It's just a few miles from Innsbruck. Very easy by train. We have stayed there three times recently at Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol (also in Rick's book) and can highly recommend it. The old town of Hall is simply charming also!
Hope this helps.
Paul
I like Hall in Tyrol better than Innsbruck. It's just down the road but is a very compact medieval city. It has enough to do for several hours of touring (more if you see everything).
I also liked Hall better than Innsbruck although Innsbruck was OK.Steves doesnt say Innsbruck is not worth visiting he merely says next to Salzburg and Vienna it comes in third.
take the day trip.
I love both Innsbruck and Salzburg. I'd say it depends on your total trip time. Innsbruck does make a nice day trip from Salzburg, but is also nice for 2 days on its own. What is your timeline?
