Hello all! I'm looking for a hotel in Salzburg for a few days. Can anyone recommend a good hotel in the Altstadt area, or within a quick walk (10 min. or so?) to the Altstadt area of Salzburg? I would like to find a decent hotel or B and B for less than $130/night if possible... Thanks!!
Hi Lora,
If you're looking for a great central location in a neat setting, try the Alstadthotel Weisse Taube. Situated in a 14th century building, you can't beat the service, breakfast spread and 100+/- euro price (double with a shower). We were there in April and enjoyed our stay. Super friendly staff.
We liked the Hotel Bergland less than 10 minutes walk from the Staats Brücke, the bridge into the center of town. It is a nice area with restaurants and good evening walks along Franz Josef Straße near the Mirabell Gardens.

Hi, I just returned from my second trip to Salzburg and Germany in 2 years, and I am in love with Salzburg, and staying in the Altstadt area. Last time I stayed in the Hotel Elephant, and it was very good, small rooms, central and it had air conditioning..which many in old bldgs do not have. This time I tried something a tad cheaper at the Golden Ente...still very central. Very charming also...old fashioned in the sense of the front desk for the hotel is thru a restaurant - I loved this, that was the way a family member had a restaurant/inn a hundred yrs ago. Wonderful breakfast and the staff I cannot say enough adjectives about. So personable and helpful. Beds in both were good. One note...if you drive in you have to park quite some way outside of the old city once you unload your gear....this time I took a train from Munich..great, quick trip....and took a $7-8 cab to hotel...MUCH better. you can have any hotel set up great side trips to many wonderful places ..they do it all the time. ThenI just took a train back to Munich and rented a car for the rest of the trip...much more relaxing for all of us...this time I just took my time exploring the city on foot with my adult kids, and drank the place in...enjoy!
My favorite is Institute San Sebastian. It may not be what you're looking for. It's a college dorm, similar to a hostel, that's very clean, quiet and cheap. It's conveniently located a few blocks from the river near the old center.
If you aren't averse to dorm-like lodging, I highly recommend it.
I agree with Ed. Weisse Taube. We walked to all the sights in old town. And an easy walk to public transportation just down the street. Great Irish pub right near it. Breakfast was nice. Great service. When we went in 2007, you were able to get a discount with your Rick Steve's book. If you have the current Rick Steve's book, look it up... Even without the discount, I remember it being very affordable. But that was a few years ago... If I go back to Salzburg, I would stay there again if it was still as inexpensive.
I can't say enough great things about the Gasthaus zur Goldenen Ente. We've stayed there twice -- once in a double with my husband and another time in their family room with the kids, and that was with two different owners. Great rooms with a good restaurant downstairs.. PERFECT location.
We've stayed twice at the Hotel Elefant. It's just around the corner from the Getreidegasse (main street in the Old Town) and a short walk to the Salzburg Cathedral.
