SALZBURG HOTEL - Old Town or New Town?

Hi everyone,
We are staying in Salzburg for 2 nights and are trying to decide on a cuple of hotels. I was first thinking of the Goldener Ente right smack dab in teh middle of the old town - easy access to all the sights, but I heard the street noise can get a little loud - plus I read some questionable reviews. The other hotel I'm thinking of is The Stadtkrug just over the bridge in the "New Town". It's supposed to be very nice, well run, nice rooms, etc.
Is it that big of a deal to stay just over the river from the old town center? I think the "New Town" is old as well, with lots of charm & old buildings as well. Any opinions would be great, as well as any other hotel recommendations. Thanks!

I had a room across the bridge in New Town and it was only a short walking distance to old town. You are correct, new town has lots of charm.

We likewise stayed in "new town" at the Hotel Bergland, which is one of Rick's recommendations. It is in a nice residential area with restaurants, cafes and other services. It is just a couple blocks off Linzer Gasse which is a busy area with several restaurants. We really like going for walks in the area after supper, and indeed found it charming as well.

Hi Bart, on our last visit to Salzburg, we took a room in "new town" Hotel Auersperg and can recommend it to you. If you 'Google' Hotel Auersperg, you will find several links for further information. Our opinion is it seems generally popular with visitors from elsewhere in Europe as well as from the Americas.
On the new town side is Kapuzinerberg - a nice hike in the woods to the top of the small mountain - and to a small castle with "watering hole". Begin this hike at the lane leading to the monestery which meets Linzer Gasse. By the way, we've always found that 3 days in Salzburg was almost enough time to do everything ... only almost.
Have a great trip! P.
