Salzburg Hotel

We are a family of four traveling to Salzburg Austria late July Having difficulty finding a decent hotel within walking distance of major attractions with air conditioning. Can anyone make a suggestion? Are summers really uncomfortable is Ac a necessity?

We are a family of 4 and stayed at the Star Inn hotel, just a 10 min walk through the tunnel to downtown. Very convenient. Not sure if they have A/C. You really may not need it depending on the weather, it just doesn't get that hot (maybe 1 or 2 weeks the whole year).

Rick wouldn't like this recommendation probably, but we stayed at the Sheraton Salzburg. It is really nice, across the glass bridge from the old town (about a 10 min walk), and directly adjacent to Schloss Mirabell/Mirabell Gardens. In fact, the famous steps in Sound of Music (where the children sing Doe a Deer) is right outside the hotel. There is also an excellent playground next to the maze of Schloss Mirabell (behind the Salzburg marionetten theatre, also adjacent to the Sheraton) that was a great place for my kids (then 5 and 7) to unwind. The hotel is quite nicely done, although mostly business travellers and attendees of the Festival (we visited in August). All of Old Salzburg is just a short walk away.

Ramiro, I stayed in this Hotel in Salzburg, and would certainly recommend it: www.hotel-goldenekrone.com/index.aspx?SP=en It's very comfortable, within easy walking distance to the sights and the owners were wonderful. The Church across the street rings the bells at various hours (not during the night), but I didn't find that to be a problem. Happy travels!

If you can live with dorm style accomodations, the Institute San Sebastian is a good choice. They gave us a couple of three bed dorm rooms that shared one bathroom for the normal per bed hostel rate. They also allowed us to park free in their tiny lot and have a washer and dryer available - all a short wal to the center. The breakfasts aren't much but it's clean, quiet and well run.

We just returned and also would recommend the Wiesse Taube. Perfect location, easily accessed by tram from train station, couldn't be better located for your needs. Just don't know about AC.

The Hotel Golden Ente (which is rated as $$$ I believe in the RS guide) actaully has an apartment that will sleep 4 -5 and is fairly reasonable and very nice in an awesome location. Have stayed there 3 times and absolutely love it.
