my husband and i are looking for a nice hotel/b&b in salzburg for 2nights at the end of october. i'd like to be able to keep it under $150/night if possible, but we are willing to splurge for the right place. help please!!!
Hi, Laura, I was in Salzburg last month and stayed at the Haus Ballwein - http://www.haus-ballwein.at - on Moosstrasse, which was recommended here, and really enjoyed it. The owner was very pleasant, and the room very clean and quite large, plus it had a beautiful view of the mountains and surrounding pastureland. I also loved the peace and quiet of being on the outskirts of town. We had a car, but generally just took the bus into town, since the stop was right next to the B&B. We paid 63 Euros a night, which included breakfast.
Take a look at the Weisse Taube (www.weissetaube.at) in the center of the old town, walking distance to everything, family run, very clean, pleasant, helpful staff, good breakfast, spacious room; we even had a view of the fortress. Close to everything, yet on a quiet side street; I would definitely stay there again.
I second the vote for Hotel Weisse Taube. We also stayed there and it was a wonderful experience. Stop in at Demel around the corner on the square and have a hot chocolate!!
I've stayed at Institute San Sebastian as a single (in a six bed dorm room) and as a family (in two three-bed rooms with a bathroom dedicated to the two rooms).......It's a college dorm so seems more like a very clean and quiet hostel at hostel prices......If you can stand that type of lodging, I recommend it.
I'll put in my vote for Haus Ballwein. A little out of the way, but very quiet and cozy. Good breakfast and the owners are so nice!
We enjoyed a stop in Hotel Bergland. It is in new town about 10 minutes walk from "Altstadt". It has a nice staff and a good breakfast. It is a residential neighborhood with nearby restaurants. They had parking; but, we walked there from the train station....http://www.berglandhotel.at/
Another vote for Hotel Weisse Taube - nice clean rooms, quiet (esp if you face the courtyard), professionally run, Internet for 1 euro/hr, and a nice breakfast spread where they actually take your order and bring you eggs, cereals, meats etc.
In September I stayed at the Sacher, which is right at the river. Since you should be visiting Salzburg in the off-season, don't dismiss this hotel. Staff will bend over backwards and stand on its head for you.
Oh, if you arrive by train, do take a taxi or bus to town. The train station is undergoing reconstruction and street signs are non existent. I got lost in September in nice weather; heaven only knows how I'd have fared walking from the station in December!
I'll also throw my vote in for Altstadthotel Weisse Taube http://www.weissetaube.at/index.php?page=start&babel=en
