My husband and I will be in Salzburg this October for 2 days. Any suggestions on places to eat and things to make certain that we see?
The castle on the hill of course (Hohensalzburg fortress). Seems like there is one is every German and Austrian city. It's a nice climb, or if you prefer, you can buy funicular tickets and take that up the side of the hill.
Mozarts home from when he was older, the Tanzhaus, has a lovely exhibition. There is a cafe right next to it, a little on the expensive side but good food. Try the Mozart cake and coffee. The coffee has this fabulous chocolate liqour. We ended up bringing back a bottle.
The Mirabell gardens are a nice place to stroll through, especially with the dwarf garden which is a unique sight. You can calso get pictures of the fountain where Julie Andrews and the kids sang Do-Re-Mi.
We've heard that the Hellbrunn palace and trick fountains are great, but it's a day trip from Salzburg. It depends on what you want to see.
We went to the marionette museum, as well as the Panorama museum. The panorama museum is quiet, cool, and has nice restrooms along with unique pictures and a panorama of salzburg from how it used to look. Well worth a stop. The Dom (cathedral) is also a nice place to stop. Outside is a statue of Mary that creates an optical illusion with angels on the building behind it of her being crowned.
Happy travels!
Jane,
The previous post provided a good list of places to see. There's a LOT of interesting sights in that area, especially if you have time to take a few day trips.
Regarding places to eat, the Guidebook has lots of suggestions. Also, I've found that Hotels usually have good recommendations for local restaurants.
Cheers!
We found a nice place to eat right there in the old town. Just walk around an look at the menus that are posted outside.
I fell in love with this city and have been there twice and still want to go back. Just to walk the streets of the Altstadt (old city) and we stayed in an old (renovated) hotel, shopped a bit and ate whenever and wherever we liked the menu. The castle and its views are great, and the hotels have info on sites and great advice if you tell them your interests. I also took a bus tour to Hitlers Eagles Nest for about half a day the first visit and you see some of the surrounding area which is lovely. My adult children were enchanted with this city too..they loved just taking a horse carriage ride in the inner city also.
You may enjoy the "Mozart Dinner" at Stiftkeller St Peter. Strolling musicians will entertain you as you dine under crystal chandeliers. The food was pretty good and runs about 40 euros pp. Tables are shared by a group of eight but we found it fun to share a table and good conversation. There was a really great outdoor food/flower market that is fun to walk through.
The Augustiner Braustubl outdoor beer garden and beer hall is a great place to enjoy fresh Austrian beer and good delicatessen-type food with the Salzburger locals.
If either of you are beer drinkers, I second an evening at the Augustiner Braustubl. That is some of the best beer in the world, IMO. Oh, and the food was good too.
I third and forth Augustiner; walk there from the Fortress through the woods. And check their operating hours!
I fifth the Augustiner and also recommend St Peter's Keller (not sure of spelling). Their turkey snitzel was great (my friend said it was better than the veal she had in Vienna). Atmosphere was great, too. Visit the Hellbrunn. We were a little disappointed with the fortress.
Salzburg is my favorite little city in Europe. Many good suggestions have already been given. Late afternoon, walk down the river and get on one of the bridges for a beautiful picture opportunity of the old city as the sun sets.
Depending on how romantic your husband might be a nightime walk through the oldtown is great. All of the churches and buildings are lit up and all the tourists are in their hotels which makes it very pleasant. We found it to be a very nice second place to romantic Paris at night. If you can take a good digital camera that does nightime shots and you will really enjoy your nightime stroll.
