Salzburg day trips

Can I stay at one hotel and see Salzburg, Salzkammerat, Reutte/Fussen castles? or should I stay 2 days in Salzburg and 2 days in Fuessen? Going to Regensburg after Fuessen.

kerry,

If you stay in Salzburg, you could certainly see the city and perhaps a small part of the Salzkammergut, but Fussen is probably a bit far for day trips. You might spend one full day touring Salzburg and take a day trip to Hallstatt. Check Bob's Special Tours for costs and information.

You won't have an entire two days to spend in Fussen, as you'll have to allow several hours for travel time from Salzburg (likely connecting through Munich). I haven't checked the exact time, so that's just a "rough estimate".

Cheers!

Kerry,

On our first trip, we actually arrived in Munich in the a.m. and spent the day exploring Fussen/Reutte, returned to Munich to spend the night and caught the early train to Salzburg. We did the SOM tour (Bob's) which gives you an overview of the lake district and later spent a day in Salzkammerat and a day in Munich from Saltzburg. We spent 5 days total (1 in Munich, 4 in Salzburg) and while we would have enjoyed staying longer at least we felt we hit the main things we wanted to see. If this is your first trip to the area you will definitely want to return.

Hi Kerry
Just to continue with what Ken said, I would definitely recommend Bob's Tours. My husband and I went on the Halstatt tour last summer and it was worth the money. We chose to take the cable car up the mountain as far as it would go and went on a short hike. The views were amazing, it was definitely a highlight of our trip! Have fun!

When I lived in Salzburg as a student (lo, these many moons ago), we took day trips often. One of our day trips was to Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut (not Salzkammerat). We visted Hallstatt (including the salt mine tour there), Mondsee (the church where the wedding scene was filmed for Sound of Music), and St Wolfgang. On another day trip from Salzburg we visited Bavaria - Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Oberammergau, and Linderhof. You could definitely do these day trips easily from Salzburg, particularly if you are driving.
