You can easily get from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden on your own using public transportation. You can take the Watzmann Express bus, RVO 840, from in front of the Salzburg Hbf. A Tagesticket, all day pass, costs 9,50€/adult and covers the bus round trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and back, plus free use of all the regular buses in Berchtesgaden. The last bus back to Berchtesgaden leaves at about 6 PM, so if you want to stay later, take the trains via Freilassing. The last train leaves Berchtesgaden Hbf for Salburg around 10 PM. A Bayern-Ticet, 26€ for two, 38€ for five, covers the round trip train and all the regular buses in Salzburg. As for Sound of Music, most of the inside scenes in the movie were shot on sound stages in Hollywood. Many outside scenes were on temporary sets, long gone. The tours will show you places that weren't actually in the movie but tell you they were. Save your money. There is one direct bus from Hallbergmoos to Freising. You can also take the S-Bahn to the airport and a bus from there to Freising. You can find schedules on the MVV website.

Gary, I found Bob's SOM tour to be fun. I booked it the day before I took it. It was a van with 7 people and they picked me up at my hotel. We say the external sites and the gardens. The guide told us where to find the convent. We saw the church where the wedding was filmed. And, we got to try a Luge, which was lots of fun. Don't be a fuddy dudddy if you're over 50. Try it! :) Pam

I also really enjoyed Bob's SOM tour and recommend it. I found our guide to be honest about what was in the movie and what wasn't. Besides being a big SOM fan, I thought the tour was a great way to get out into the countryside since I wasn't going to be driving myself. It was great being picked up right at m hotel. Drop off after the tour was not at the hotel, though, so be aware of that if you take it. We saw some beautiful scenery in addition to the SOM sites. I did book the tour ahead of time, and the tour was fully booked with 8 people in the van. I did find Berchtesgaden very easy to get to on the public bus as described in a previous post.

For the Panorama SOM tour, I would probably make reservations when you get there. We did the tour on Christmas day, 2011, making reservations that morning for the afternoon tour. The bus was completely full. I have enjoyed the tour three times since 1970 (also in 1987 and 2011)). There are also many locations in the old city which the tour doesn't see. I would view the movie again before you go so you can recognize them.
