Hi - Am looking for recommendations on good hotel/pensions?(not hostels) in Salzburg and Munich for early July (5th-13th) -- Salzburg: if not in the old town then close enough on the right bank to be easy walking distance. Munich: Near the Marienplatz/Viktualienmarkt or..a safe area with easy subway access. Would prefer to be in the "historic" part of town. In both cases, ambiance and price are more important than amenities: small, "mom & pop", old but clean , <80 euros if possible. Thanks again!
We stayed at Hotel Sallerhof just south of Salzburg on one trip. We had a car and you are within 5 minutes of parking right off of the Salzach River by the Getreidegasse/Old Town. They were extremely friendly and helpful! Someone on this post noted that they stayed there and rode the bus into town very easily. On our last trip, we came into the Salzburg train station, took the bus to the Old Town and hopped off at Mozartplatz bus stop, and stayed at Hotel Weisse Taube. We enjoyed being right under Hohensalzburg Fortress. Check out both of them for pricing at that time-both were excellent choices!
You may want to check out the Bloberger Hof, on the bus route into Old Town (right across the street) The owners-mother and daughter team-are lovely and very accommodating. Of course, they speak English very well. It is a lovely place with a beautiful view of the mountains...impeccably clean...they also serve excellent food. We would return to the same place if Salzburg is in the plans. You didn't mention age or interest, but the Kehlstein-Hitler's Eagle Nest is in Obersalzburg, very close by, with very interesting Nazi museum. Sound of Music tour is lots of fun with Bob's tour, in a small van, small group. The lake district outside of Salzburg is worth a visit. St. Gilgen is one of the prettiest places-right out of a story book. Bon Voyage!
Kathy,
You might have a look at the Hotel Goldene Krone in Salzburg and Hotel Uhland in Munich. Both should be close to the cost you listed, but you'd have to contact them for a definite price.
Happy travels!
The Hotel Blauer Bock near Viktualienmarkt in Munich has double rooms for less than 80 Euros but they are with a wash sink. You would use showers and toilets down the hall. It is a good hotel with an excellent breakfast and a friendly staff.

www.pension-elisabeth.at have stayed here several times. its a 10 min. walk from the train station, and 15min walk to the downtown area . 5min by bus. price wise 40euro and up at this time. very clean and highly reccommended. but book immediately or you will not get a room.
Thanks very much! You were all extremely helpful. Can't wait to get there!
Will you send us a postcard, Kathy?
Have a great trip! P
Aloha Kathy
I also highly recommend Hotel Weisse Taube for Salzburg. The staff was awesome and our rooms were clean and quiet. The location couldn't be beat, they had a wonderful breakfast room and we could walk everywhere. It was an amazing experience to stay right in the heart of the Old Town.
I also agree with the recommendation for Bob's Tours for a Sound of Music tour. Although I know a lot of people roll their eyes at the idea, I loved seeing the city and the countryside. The Salzkammergut region is so beautiful, I can't wait to return someday. It's funny because every female I told about that tour said "Wow, that sounds like so much fun" and every male I told about it just rolled their eyes! Ha ha.
Happy travels!
