Hello Cheryl. Some people liked the "Sound of Music" tour, in a small bus or van. But I suggest that you do not think of it as a tour of places that were in the movie The Sound of Music. Several of the scenes in that movie were not filmed there. Much of the movie was made in a movie production studio at Hollywood. And the big entrance room in the big house was filmed in a house in London. The scenes in that movie were contrived. Even the scenes of people in the gazebo were filmed in a movie production studio. In the movie, that gazebo is seen from a distance. That gazebo is at a different location now. Instead of going on a "Sound of Music" tour, I would prefer to spend the money for renting a car that day.

In Salzburg, we enjoyed (of course) the Hohensalzburg castle, we loved wandering the old town, the old city hall (Altes Rathaus)...we did the Zoo (Tiergarten Hellbrunn) and nearby to that is Hellbrunn Palace. We bought a Salzburg card as we had 3 full days there. Wish we had time to do the river cruise.
We only had about 1/2 day in Munich, but we enjoyed the Englishergarten...and we found the spot in the park where the guys 'surf'...thanks to Rick's map...that was cool. I think we managed to squeeze in some of the Deutsches Museum, but it's a blur! Hubby enjoyed it.

For Salzburg: if you are not renting a car, the Sound of Music Tour is a nice way to see the Salzkammergut region. I also enjoy Mozart's Geburtshaus in the middle of town and having a lunch, where Mozart and his family dined, in St. Peter Stiftskeller is a wonderful experience. For a wonderful souvenir, there is a store that has a huge ion of ornaments made from eggs. It's on the main pedestrian zone in the old city. PM me if you want more info. In Munich, I always enjoy the Alte Pinakothek (Engl. Old Pinakothek) and, of course, Marienplatz. Have a wonderful trip!

Cheryl,
I would spend more time in Salzburg. Munich is not what it used to be. Mareinplatz and he Hofbrauhaus are the peaks along with the churches, English Garden and the surfers. My favorite thing to do was the vitelsmarkt, if you could not find a good lunch there, you just were not hungry. Salzburg is more picturesque. We had a car and drove to Hallstatt so we skipped the tours.

What are your interests? I was not as fond of Munich as some others, but I loved the Deutsches Museum (science and technology) and would gladly return just to see this.

Two summers ago we took Bob's Sound of Music tour. There was only one SOM in our foursome, but we all thought the tour was great. It's not limited to SOM sights so a nice way to see a few sights in the Salzburg area.
