Any recommendations for lodging for these destinations -travelling with 2 children (ages 8 and 12) in early December?
In Munich our family of four stayed at the Hotel Blauer Bock. It was a decent sized room with a good breakfast. The hotel is located at the Viktualienmarkt very near the main square, Marienplatz:

In Salzburg we stayed at the Hotel Bergland. It is a nice hotel with a very friendly staff. They remodeled this last spring and the rooms were nice before that. The hotel is in the "new town" about 10 minutes walk from the center of "old town". It is in a nice residential area with plenty of services and restaurants in the area.
We are staying in Munich for 5 days during Christmas and we are staying at Eden Wolff Hotel. It is a block from the main train station and in walking distance to most of the main attractions. The prices were very good on Expedia.
I'd check the local tourist office website for self-catering apartments. Hotels can be pricey, and a lot of the self-catering places in Germany and Austria will rent by the day instead of by the week. We stayed at a farmhouse in the Salzkammergut (just outside of Salzburg) that had several apartments that rented for about 50 euros/day. There were 4 other families staying there, and my son absolutely loved it there.
Amy,
I stayed at the Hotel Uhland in Munich and Hotel Goldene Krone in Salzburg, and would most definitely recommend both. Both are conveniently located and the owners and staff are wonderful.
I always have fond memories of the breakfasts at Hotel Uhland!
Happy travels!
Amy, we stayed at the Salzburg Zellerhof Bed & Breatfast which was inexpensive and wonderful. Google them. Dorsey

How are you travelling--by car or train?
Hi Amy, We visited Munich and Salzburg this summer with our three young children (4, 7 and 10). In Munich we stayed at Hotel Bauer Block. The location was excellent and we had a large room but the hotel felt very stale and businesslike. The staff were not particularly friendly and the breakfast was not good. But the location made it all ok. In Salzburg we stayed at der Goldene Ente and highly recommend it. We had the family apartment on the top floor, which includes a separate bedroom for the kids. The room was very attractive and comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Dinners in the restaurant downstairs were great, and it was right in the heart of old town; easy walk to everything. We arrived and departed by train, taking a taxi from the station.
Check out Pensions from Rick Steves or other guidebooks. Since it's low season the prices will be good, they will be easy to book on short notice and will give your children a better idea of how German's live.
In Salzburg, I like staying at Institute San Sebastian. I've stayed as a single and with my family of five. It may be too hostelish for you but it's cheap, clean and quiet.
