We are traveling soon to Salzburg and staying near the Salzburger Dom. There is no on-site parking at our hotel and the daily valet fee is quite expensive. We are considering parking at the Monchsberg parking garage but concerned about the walking distance and safety of the unattended vehicle. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?
Sorry, I can't give you any concrete suggestions. Just to put parking fees into perspective as you do nieed to be prepared for some considerable expense: we paid about $15 for a day of parking 18 years ago ... It's not going to be any cheaper these years!
I can tell you there is a good sized parking area @ the Mirabell Gardens, right across the river and over the little bridge. I have no recollection about the price, though nothing in Salzburg was particularly inexpensive. I can definitely say the area seemed perfectly safe. From the parking area, it was just a couple minutes' walk back over to the Getreidegasse, Mozart's house, and the rest of the Altstadt. The heart of the historic area of Salzburg is fairly compact, and pretty flat... walking around is easy, and what everybody does.
I would go along with the suggestion that you find another hotel with free parking and it won't be in the Altstadt. A few years ago we stayed at the Goldner Hirsch in the Altstadt and paid through the nose. It was a very nice hotel and we had a very nice stay for one night and made a mental note to plan ahead better next time. We stay in lower cost tourist hotels. The Drei Kreuz and the Ganslhof are at the limit of walking from the Altstadt for us. The Drei Kreuz is a bit spartan but the Ganslhof is very nice. The other place we stayed at was the Hotel Turnerwirt which is well beyond walking distance but has a bus stop virtually at the front door. All three places have free parking and we would happily go back to any of them. The other thing you could do is look at the available options at Booking.com or Venere.com An added note, we had a great dinner in the Altstadt eating inside, up stairs, at the Zum Eulenspiegel at Hagenauerplatz 2. It is a relativley well established restaurant ... same location for 680 years. Hope I have been of some help. Have a good trip.
Hi John, Here's a few links to parking. If you can change hotels to one just outside the center or one with free parking, I would. I would never book a hotel one place and park the car in another. Why have the car then? It seems the Altstadt garage (Monchsburg) is 14 Euro per day (24 hours). http://gis.stadt-salzburg.at/common/legend/PP_8001_Altstadtgarage.pdf www.visit-salzburg.net/travel/parking.htm www.salzburg.info/de/anreise_verkehr/auto/parken_in_salzburg http://gis.stadt-salzburg.at/citymap/citymap.asp?parking=1
James, that sounded like a challenge! Assuming you CAN'T change hotels at this point (which as others have pointed out, with free parking will certainly also involve a bus ride to the Altstadt) a Park & Ride is your next best option. Here's a brochure:
http://www.salzburg.info/bdb06_anreise_verkehr/park_ride_folder.pdf Parking alone is 5 or 9 euro for the day depending on which P&R you use, or you can combine a day of parking with unlimited transit use for a bit more for up to 5 people. Not as good a deal as the P&Rs I've used in Strasbourg (where for like 3 euro you get all day parking plus unlimited transit for your entire car) but probably better than any other option you have aside from changing hotels.
John, you haven't mentioned the balance of your itinerary and why you are driving. Might it be better to turn in the car prior to your Salzburg stay, arrive by train, depart by train, and pick up another car at your next stop?
