Salzburg airport?

Hello from Hawaii-We are looking at making Salzburg our last desination for our trip next year but we are wondering about the airport (if it is too small etc.). Rick Steves doesn't say much about it in his Best of Europe book. Could anyone share their experiences using this airport? We would be looking to take a short flight from Salzburg to Frankfurt-then from Frankfurt back home. Also, we will not have a car-is there an airport shuttle (we will stay in Old Town) or is a taxi best? Thanks in advance!

The airport is only about 4 km west of the center of Salzburg and you could actually take a city bus to the door. Numbers 2, 27 and 8 go to the airport and there are luggage carts at the bus stop. You enter the lobby with the check-in counters via a covered walkway from the bus stop. The ticket is 2 Euro and you can get it from the automat or the driver and have to cancel it on the bus. It looks like bus number 8 is your best bet. It goes from Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) to the airport and takes about 15 min., runs about every 10 min. However, it does not seem to run on Sundays. You can actually take the train to the airport from the main railway station, as well, and of course, a taxi. Since you're not going to Europe until next year, can you not route your trip home through Munich? It's my favorite airport in Germany, easy to navigate, not as crazily busy as Frankfurt and an easy train ride from Salzburg. Once you're in Salzburg the people at your hotel or bed and breakfast will be able to give you up-to-date info on how to get to the airport, as well.
