We will be in Salzburg for 2 full days and 2 half days (arrival/departure days). Is it feasible to see Berchtesgaden, Church of Bartholemew, Hitler's Eagles Nest and Hallstatt in one full day? Suggestions for 3-day must-see sights in Salzburg? Thanks for your recommendations.
"Is it feasible to see Berchtesgaden, Church of Bartholemew, Hitler's Eagles Nest and Hallstatt in one full day?" No!
First of all, how are your travelling (train or car)?
It depends on what you mean by "see". But really, no.
no
I agree- NO, and you wouldnt want to. I honestly would not go to Hallstatt if you cant spend the night. Its an amazing little place. Berchtesgaden and Eagles nest and the church could be done in 1 day from Salzburg. But you also want some time just for Salzburg... if there was any way to do your 2 nights there then move to Hallstatt I would highly recommend it.
For the 3 days, include the ice caves at Werfen, cable car up the Untersberg, and salt mines at Hallein or Berchtesgaden
Kyle You need at least one full day for Salzberg and my recommend would be to go to Hallstatt. Train travel is a bit lengthy but oh the view and the town is a must. We would have liked another day (spent 1-1/2) just to see the salt mine and walk the area. It is one of the most picturesque towns to see. The fresh fish is also a must. Just Google Hallstat to see some of the pictures.
Thanks to everyone for your input. Kyle
In 2002 I went to Berchtesgaden and, starting there, I saw Eagle Nest and visited the Dokumentation center at the base in one full day. If you leave out the Dok Center, still expect half a day from Berchtesgaden, longer from Salzburg. St. Barts is done on the Königssee boat. The trip just to St. Barts and back might take half a day, depending on the crowd, and I would really suggest going all the way to the Obersee at the far end of the lake. It's more interesting than St. Barts. That still doesn't give you time to see the lovely village of Berchtesgaden. Round trip and seeing Hallstatt will take a day and, even than, you won't see enough of Hallstatt to make it worthwhile.
You can see Berchtesgaden as a daytrip (I've only done it by car, not sure about other options) from Salzburg. We planned the salt mine and time for views, but not touring WWII sights. It turned out to be a cloudy day, so we pretty much toured the salt mine and were back in Salzburg by lunch time. I wouldn't consider trying to see Hallstatt in the same day. I agree that you want at least one full day to see the sights in and around Salzburg center.
My favourites in Salzburg: In the city Salzburg itself: 2 musts: - visit to the castle - a rickshaw city tour (after this, you have seen pretty much everything of the city)
Around Salzburg there are just so many things to do: Watergames in Hellbrunn, Ice Caves in Werfen- so impressive, the area around Zell am See and St. Johann (especially the Canyon Liechtensteinklamm), Hallstatt is really beautiful as well.
