We are going to Spain/ Portugal for 5 weeks .......
Some of our trip will be following RS Spain Portugal in 22 days route.......... I am in the final stages of booking hotels and wondered if time would be better spent in Salamanca over Coimbra........ If anyone been to both, could you please give me your thoughts and reasons for one over the other... Thanks
Salamanca is over-touristed and there's no reason it should be. I've been there twice and unless it's blocking my path won't go again. Coimbra is a neat break from the rest of the stuff you'll see. I've been there three times - - the last two on a detour just because we like it. You can relax more and it's cheaper. It also has better architecture. To put it another way: Salmanca stinks, Coimbra doesn't.
I've been to both Salamanca and Coimbra and liked both! It's been 4 years since I visited Salamanca so it might have become more touristy since I was there. I think that you'd enjoy either choice!
