My wife and I will be driving from Burgos to Madrid then on to Cordoba. We will be spending 3 days in Madrid. I had been thinking of spending one day in Salamanca before Madrid, but now I want to fit a trip to Toledo in. Would it be worthwhile to keep with that plan and make Toledo a day trip from Madrid? Or should I skip Salamanca and make Toledo an overnight trip on the way to Cordoba?
I'm not sure I understand....did you want to subtract one night from Madrid for Salamanca? Whatever your plan, I suggest you make Toledo an overnight on the way to Cordoba, since you're driving. But that shouldn't affect a decision to spend a day in Salamanca. You could, if you want, make Salamanca a stop on the way from Burgos to Madrid....a bit out of the way, but the total driving time should be about six hours. So if you leave Burgos early enough, you should be able to spend several hours in Salamanca before heading for Madrid. Personally, I find Madrid a fascinating city, and three days there would be well spent.
Thanks Norm, sorry I wasn't clear enough. I do want to keep the 3 days in Madrid so I was wondering if I should stay with my original plans and then make Toledo a day trip from Madrid or to skip Salamanca in favor of an overnight stay in Toledo. From your post it seems that I should keep Salamanca in my plans and possibly make Toledo a day trip from Madrid. Do you think that is feasible?
I haven't been to Toledo but Salamanca was a highlight of our trip to Spain. It's a college town with a great central square--lots of good tapas restaurants. It might be a nice contrast to Madrid. It just depends on how much time you want to spend in Madrid. I love the museums in Madrid but it's not my favorite city in Spain. I prefer smaller cities like Salamanca, Santiago, Granada, and Seville. Someone else might have a better idea of time in Salamanca vs. Toledo. Have a great trip!
To see Toledo, take the high speed train from Madrid. Arrive in 1/2 hour. About $20.00 (US) round trip. Many trains run during the day. (Also, the Madrid train station is a great site in itself!). Public bus from the station in Toledo to the heart of the city is about $1.00 I think. Lots to see there, walking only!, as it would be impossible to see the city in an automobile. The cathederal is marvelous. Have not seed Salamanca so I can not comment on it. However, the travel channel programs indicate it would be a great choice as well.
We just returned from Spain in Oct. Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, wine country and Barcelona. Segovia was my favorite over Toledo, and I think it should be on your way from Salmanca?? The aquaduct alone is worth it, but the town is as charming as they come with the Alcazar and cathedral and not very crowded. If you go to Toledo, stay overnight at the Parador and pay the few extra Euros for the rooms with a view of the city...it was amazing!!! We brought a bottle of wine to the room and sat on our balcony enjoying the unbelievable scenery!
