Hican anyone help me? I'm travelling in Europe with my son and we are headed to SpainBarcelona and Madrid on Monday. Saw the headlines on Wednesday that there were riots, stricks, and airport shut downs in Spain. Does anyone know if it is safe to go there now? I am not having any luck with the internet to find out; no one in Nice seems to know anything. We leave Europe from Madrid, but now I am afraid to go in fear we may get
stranded there. Anyone know? We are in Nice, France, right now. Thanks.
The situation Wednesday in Spain was part of a coordinated one-day strike against the austerity measures across Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece, with sympathy rallies elsewhere in Europe. These demonstrations are planned well in advance, so you will know if they are going to affect you. In the Wednesday action, some flights were cancelled apparently, though I don't think Madrid Airport ever fully shut down. You can keep abreast of the situation on the BBC's website, at bbb.co.uk. I wouldn't worry too much, since no strikes or demonstrations are planned for Monday. It's always possible that there could be a spontaneous strike or demonstration, but it would be very unlikely to cause enough disruption to cause flights to be cancelled.
It's very safe. Scroll down a bit in this section of the helpline and read the replies in the thread "Austerity strikes across Europe". It deals with the same topic, pretty much, and no one has had any problems there.
My sister and I both flew out of Paris Wednesday,me heading for Dublin, she heading for Madrid. AirFrance called her Sunday to let her know her flight was cancelled and she could rebook it the next day. She decided to skip Madrid and hang out with me in Dublin and they changed it free of charge. I'd call your airline and make sure they have a phone number to reach you and not worry too much about it. It's happened to me more than once with strikes and weather and it works itself out. Have a fun time in Spain!
Thank you all for your feedback. That is the most info I have been able to
gleen. We'll go ahead and head out. Again, thank you!!
