We plan to return rental car and spend a night in Calais next spring then take ferry to Dover. We are wondering if this a safe plan given the recent news about large number of illegal immigrants and the closing of the "Jungle". Has anyone been through there recently? Any problems?
We took the ferry from Calais to Dover in June, 2008. The night before we left France we stayed at Hotel Clery, Hesdin l'Abbe which is less than an hour from Calais. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and lovely grounds. You might want to consider staying there the night before. We visited Honfleur and Etretat in the afternoon before driving to the hotel. If you like this idea, be sure to have several euro coins for the toll road fees on the way to Calais! The rental car returns are right in the ferry building. If you want more details, send me a PM.
I didn't see any crazy things last month. I have been told the Hotel Ibis right next to the Chunnel is clean and fine.
