We will be traveling by train from Frankfurt to Rudesheim, want to spend an hour or two in Rudesheim and then take the boat up to Bacharach where we are spending 2 nights. When we arrive in Rudesheim, does the train station have any lockers or is there a place we could leave our luggage? Do the K-D boats leave from Rudesheim or another town? Yes, I know Rudesheim has gotten some poor reviews on this site, but one of my traveling companions has been there several times in the past & really liked it, so we're going back for a quick visit for her sake. Thanks for any advice. Janet

There are no lockers in R'heim. I suggest you go to Bacharach first and drop the bags, then train down to Bingen for the ferry to R'heim; or just go to Bingen Hbf, where there are lockers. Then walk into town and ferry across to R'heim. It's not far. You can board a K-D boat in any of the towns where they stop. www.k-d.de
Thanks. Either of those suggestions sound like they'll work out fine.
Depends on when you arrive in Rüdesheim. If it is a day in the summer, you can barely walk down the streets for all the tourists that have arrived by bus and boat, and the stores sell the tackiest souvenirs to be found in Germany. The chairlift ride is nice, but Germania is all covered up right now, getting a face-lift. You can get the some stunning views from the Marksburg Castle for example, and I am sure that there are other places to have similar scenic views. Considering you will need to drop off your luggage and then back-track, consider using your precious vacation time going to some other town with some authentic charm, but minus the 1000's of tourists.
I love Rudesheim and I'm sure you will have a lovely time. Here is a clip from something I submitted to TripAdvisor, perhaps it will give you a good idea. My family and I visited the Rudesheim/Rhine River area . There is an interesting experience. From Rudesheim, you can take a 5 minute chairlift above the lovely vineyard hills, the scenery is wonderful. When you get to the top, there is the Niederwald Monument which is enormous statue honoring the nation of Germany. It appears to have a similar style as the Statue of Liberty. You can then take the chairlift back down to Rudesheim, or, instead you can go on a lovely walk on a smooth, flat trail through some forests. After about 30 minutes, you will come to an area which is enclosed and you can feed some deer or you can continue around the corner and take another chairlift down to the town of Assmanhausan. The views are spectacular of the Rhine River and the town below. This chairlift is perhaps 10 minutes. Once you get to the town, you may have a bite to eat. You are right at the Rhine river. You can take a quick boat ride back to Rudesheim, probably a 10 minute ride. When you buy your ticket in Rudesheim, you choose a "circle" ticket, or something like that so that your ticket covers, both chairlifts and the boat. It is very affordable, easy walking, fantastic scenery, and a great way to get outside. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187345-d192310-Reviews-Niederwald_Monument_Niederwalddenkmal-Ruedesheim_am_Rhein_Hesse.html SuzieeQQ
